A 74-year-old grandmother and mother of 16, Winnifred Lawrence, from Clondalkin, Dublin, has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for insurance fraud. Lawrence falsely claimed multiple injuries from slipping and falling in various locations between 2012 and 2014, receiving over €28,000 in fraudulent payments.
Despite claiming to have tripped on footpaths, slipped in stores, and burned herself on a bus, Lawrence pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud. Her defence counsel highlighted her poor literacy and health as mitigating factors, but the judge handed down a prison sentence with the final year-and-a-half suspended.
IPB Insurance, which covers public liability for council footpaths, discovered the fraud and worked with the Garda Economic Crime Bureau to prosecute Lawrence. The lead anti-fraud investigator, Joyce Foley, emphasized the importance of the conviction in sending a message that insurance fraud is not tolerated.
This case serves as a reminder of the impact insurance fraud has on everyone’s premiums and the difficulty insurers face in obtaining convictions due to high evidence standards and lengthy investigations.
