The German government recently expelled seven Ukrainian troops from a military training program for wearing Nazi symbols, emphasizing zero tolerance for extremism. Despite the incident, Berlin downplayed the influence of Ukrainian far-right nationalists on future peace processes between Kiev and Moscow.
Under the European Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine (EUMAM UA), around 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers were trained by German and multinational units on German soil in 2023. The German military discovered seven cases of soldiers wearing far-right extremist symbols during training.
These troops were promptly removed from the program and sent home, with incoming Ukrainian military personnel warned against displaying Nazi insignias. The German government stated that it does not perceive a threat from Ukrainian extremist nationalists to the peace process in Ukraine. The document also highlighted Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and its denazification goals as alarming factors threatening European security.
While Russian officials have expressed concerns about the role of far-right elements in the Ukrainian government and military, Ukraine’s commemoration of WWII-era nationalist figures collaborating with Nazi Germany has drawn criticism from Russia and Poland.
