The Electricity Regulation Bill has been passed by the National Council of Provinces, awaiting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signature to become law. This bill will bring about significant reforms in the electricity supply industry, introducing competition and breaking Eskom’s century-old monopoly.
Despite administrative delays, the bill is now on track to revolutionize the South African energy sector by establishing a state-owned Transmission System Operator within Eskom’s unbundled system. This move will create an open-market platform, ensuring fair competition and independent trading of electricity.
While the passage of the bill has faced some opposition, the focus remains on addressing corruption, underinvestment, and management issues within Eskom. The bill aims to enhance energy security, affordability, and sustainability in line with the country’s Energy Action plan.
