Dutch coalition govt proposes ‘strictest ever’ asylum rules

The newly agreed Dutch coalition government has proposed a strict asylum policy, opting out of EU rules and considering moving the Israel embassy to Jerusalem. Led by far-right leader Geert Wilders, the 26-page coalition agreement promises the strictest entry rules for asylum and comprehensive migration control. The coalition aims to challenge EU migration policy, curb labor migration, and limit foreign student admissions. They plan to increase offshore gas production and build nuclear reactors but scrap additional carbon emissions taxes. The agreement also addresses environmental regulations for farmers, including diesel price reductions. The parties commit to supporting Ukraine and consider relocating the Dutch embassy in Israel. The plans involve spending cuts, lower taxes, and welfare limits, with a technocratic cabinet in the works. Former minister Ronald Plasterk is a potential candidate for prime minister, as Mark Rutte transitions to NATO. The formation of the cabinet is expected to take weeks after parliamentary debates on the government plans.
