Concern was raised at the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting regarding the increasing number of asylum applications expected this year, with estimates ranging from 26,000 to 30,000. Finance Minister Michael McGrath highlighted the urgent need for the Government to better manage the issue, as it has become a major political concern.
Several speakers expressed worries about the Government’s communication strategy surrounding migration. Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien and Health Minister Stephen Donnelly were also present at the meeting, where party leader Micheál Martin was notably absent due to other engagements.
Deputy James O’Connor emphasized the lack of support for communities dealing with an influx of migrants. Minister McGrath stressed the importance of improving both public communication and management systems related to migration.
The Minister warned that up to 30,000 asylum seekers could enter Ireland this year, citing a recent week where 600 applicants arrived. The need for immediate action and better coordination was underscored throughout the meeting.
