Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times after a cabinet meeting, causing widespread shock and condemnation from EU leaders. The 59-year-old PM was rushed to the hospital in a life-threatening condition, with reports indicating he was shot in the abdomen in Handlova, northeast of Bratislava.
Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová condemned the “brutal and reckless attack” on Mr Fico and wished him a speedy recovery, while Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed deep shock and solidarity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also denounced the violence as a “vile attack” that undermines democracy.
Mr Fico, known for his populist and sometimes Kremlin-friendly stance, has had a long political career marked by shifting positions to appeal to changing public sentiments. The incident led to the cancellation of an opposition protest planned against government broadcaster reforms.
This alarming attack highlights the importance of safeguarding democracy and respecting the values of the EU and NATO, of which Slovakia is a member.
