Parliament gathered to address the Syrian refugee crisis and the controversial EU aid package, witnessing a surge in anti-refugee sentiments and calls for stricter measures. Speaker Nabih Berri emphasized the critical importance of the session for Lebanon’s future. Caretaker PM Najib Mikati stressed the need for Lebanese consensus in resolving the crisis, highlighting that the aid package is unconditional and aims to incentivize refugee returns to safe areas in Syria.
MPs voiced concerns about the aid potentially encouraging refugees to stay in Lebanon, with calls for immediate deportation of illegal residents. The Lebanese government was urged to coordinate with Syria and ensure measures are law-abiding and respectful of human dignity. Kataeb Party chief MP Sami Gemayel proposed enhancing land transportation over opening seas for refugee transfers.
The EU’s 1 billion euro aid package includes funds for security and border control to curb migration from Lebanon. With 780,000 Syrian refugees in a population of 6 million, Lebanon faces immense challenges. Amidst growing resentment towards refugees, calls for repatriation and stricter border control have intensified.
