French President Emmanuel Macron called for a defense and national security council meeting to address the recent riots in New Caledonia which resulted in two deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Due to the crisis, Macron canceled his trip to a French region and rescheduled the weekly cabinet meeting. Reports from New Caledonia confirmed a second fatality, with details about the incident still unclear.
The unrest, linked to protests against constitutional reform, has claimed two lives and left many injured. “Around 100” police and gendarmes were among those harmed, while numerous properties were set ablaze during the chaos.
