The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has received a generous $1.8 million contribution from the Japanese government to support refugees in Jordan. This funding will enable UNHCR to provide basic needs cash assistance to the most vulnerable refugees and support community-based protection work, with a special focus on empowering refugee women.
Dominik Bartsch, UNHCR Representative to Jordan, emphasized the importance of humanitarian funding amidst mounting socio-economic pressure on refugees, praising Japan’s support for providing dignified assistance to those in need. The Ambassador of Japan to Jordan, Jiro Okuyama, highlighted Japan’s commitment to working with UNHCR to support Jordan’s efforts in welcoming refugees and ensuring that no one is left behind.
With around 630,000 Syrian refugees, 52,000 Iraqi refugees, and 12,000 Yemeni refugees, Jordan continues to show exceptional hospitality towards those in need. Japan’s contribution aims to strengthen refugee communities and enhance their long-term resilience through community mobilization and addressing basic needs.
This partnership exemplifies the collective effort to support refugees in Jordan and reaffirms the commitment to leaving no one behind in times of crisis.
