Comedian Takes on Modi in Indian Election
A comedian, Shyam Rangeela, known for his impressions of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially filed his nomination papers to run as an independent candidate in the general elections. Despite facing rejection multiple times from local officials, Rangeela’s paperwork was finally accepted in Varanasi, Modi’s constituency. This move has emboldened other candidates like him.
Rangeela, 29, highlighted the challenges he faced, including being denied entry to the district magistrate’s office while Modi filed his papers. He emphasized the importance of offering voters choices in a democracy. Rangeela’s candidacy is seen as a symbolic gesture to address unfairness in the political system.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate faces little competition in some areas, raising concerns about the lack of political diversity. Varanasi will vote on 1 June, with results announced on 4 June. Regardless of the outcome, Rangeela’s bid signifies a push for more inclusive elections in India.
