Biden admin to send bn in arms to Israel amid Rafah’s opposition

The Biden administration has informed Congress of a $1 billion weapons package for Israel, despite recent threats to withhold some arms over concerns of an assault on Rafah. The package, part of a larger $95 billion defense support approved by Congress for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, includes weapons from US manufacturers.

Last week, Biden warned of withholding bombs and artillery shells if Israel attacked Rafah, where many Palestinians sought refuge. The administration recently halted a shipment of bombs due to concerns about civilian risks. While left-leaning members of Congress oppose the sale, the Republican Party largely supports arming Israel.

The package may include $700 million in tank ammunition and $500 million in tactical vehicles. Despite criticism, the Biden administration remains committed to Israel’s security. Emergency needs have bypassed regular review processes, raising concerns about transparency in military transfers.

Overall, the administration continues to provide military assistance to Israel and engage in dialogue about the appropriate use of weaponry in conflict zones.
