Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has directed the government to ensure video link arrangements for imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan to participate in a case regarding changes to the country’s accountability laws. The case, heard by a five-member bench led by CJP Isa, involves amendments made to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999, which Imran Khan had challenged in 2022. The amendments aimed to limit NAB’s jurisdiction, reduce the term of NAB officials, and transfer cases to other authorities, prompting Imran to argue that they were made to benefit influential accused individuals and legitimize corruption.
After 53 hearings, the Supreme Court reserved its verdict on the case in September 2023, ultimately ruling in favor of reinstating corruption cases against public office holders. However, CJP Isa hinted at a possible reevaluation of proceedings during a later hearing. Meanwhile, the apex court also addressed appeals related to the case from both the government and a private citizen, Zuhair Ahmed Siddiqui.
