Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa ordered the government to set up video link arrangements for imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan to participate in a case regarding amendments to the country’s accountability laws. The five-member bench, led by the chief justice, heard arguments about changes made by the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in 2022, including reducing the term of the NAB chairman and prosecutor general and transferring pending cases to relevant authorities. Imran Khan challenged these amendments, claiming they were made to benefit the powerful and legitimize corruption.
The Supreme Court reserved its verdict after 53 hearings on September 5, 2023, and on September 15, ordered the reinstatement of corruption cases against public officials that were withdrawn due to the amendments. The court also deemed Imran’s plea to be valid, signaling a potential shift in accountability laws.
