The proposed legislation to raise the legal age for purchasing cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21 has been described as “significant” by Tánaiste Micheál Martin. Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly is seeking Cabinet approval for the bill, which will include a “wash-through” period for those currently aged 18 to 21.
Mr. Martin emphasized the importance of reducing smoking rates among young people, citing research that shows raising the age to 21 can have a positive impact. The ‘Tobacco 21’ report highlights the potential benefits of this change, including a 25% reduction in smoking rates among teenagers.
Chris Macey from the Irish Heart Foundation praised the legislation as a crucial public health measure, while Vincent Jennings expressed concerns about potential restrictions on those under 21 selling tobacco products.
Additional legislation is also planned to address issues such as banning disposable vapes and regulating vape flavors and packaging. Overall, the move to raise the smoking age is seen as a positive step towards protecting the health of future generations.
