Tragedy struck Mumbai when a massive billboard collapsed on a petrol station, claiming the lives of 14 people and injuring 75 others. The incident occurred during strong winds and heavy rain in the city, prompting rescue operations by local authorities.
Despite efforts to provide medical treatment to the injured, the death toll continued to rise. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) faced challenges during the rescue mission due to the billboard’s collapse on top of the petrol pump.
As investigations unfolded, Mumbai police filed a criminal case against the owner of Ego Media, the company responsible for installing the billboard. City councillor Rakhee Jadhav emphasized the importance of proper construction practices, suggesting that the tragedy could have been avoided.
In the wake of the incident, the Maharashtra state government ordered a high-level inquiry and pledged compensation payments to the victims’ families. The city of Mumbai encountered additional disruptions from the storm, including uprooted trees, power outages, and flight diversions at the international airport.
