Hong Kong leader John Lee faced questions about his connections with one of three men charged by the UK for spying, straining UK-China diplomatic ties.
A photo of Mr. Lee with one of the accused was circulating online as he denounced the UK government’s allegations as “fabrications.”
The accused individuals have been charged with national security offenses related to assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service and foreign interference.
Despite appearing in court in London, the accused remained silent except for confirming their identities. Mr. Yuen is the manager of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London.
The situation has led to the British Foreign Secretary summoning the Chinese ambassador under the National Security Act, citing unacceptable behavior from China.
Mr. Lee expressed strong condemnation of the UK’s actions and demanded an explanation for Mr. Yuen’s prosecution.
