A recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology revealed that half of Ukrainian refugees in Germany, Poland, and Czechia are less likely to return to Ukraine. Over 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees are currently registered for temporary protection in EU states, with Poland hosting the highest number.
The poll also found that 66% of respondents are satisfied with their lives in these countries. While some have already obtained citizenship elsewhere, many others are still looking to do so. Safety and functioning infrastructure are key factors that would influence their decision to return.
According to Anton Hrushetskyi, the executive director of KIIS, many Ukrainian refugees are losing their connection to Ukraine and face a difficult decision of whether to settle in a new place or wait to return. The government and Ukrainian society must show support for those who wish to come back.
