The Irish Government to Address Concerns with UK Over High Court Judgment on Rwanda Flights
The Minister for Finance has stated that Ireland will engage with the British government at a political and diplomatic level following a recent High Court judgment in Belfast concerning Rwanda flights. The judgment disallowed provisions of the UK’s Illegal Migration Act in Northern Ireland, citing violations of human rights post-Brexit arrangements.
Mr. Justice Humphreys deemed certain aspects of the Act incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights and the Good Friday peace agreement of 1998. The Act grants the government powers to detain and remove asylum seekers, including sending them to Rwanda.
Minister Michael McGrath acknowledged the complexity of the situation and expressed the Irish government’s lack of control over the judgment. There are concerns that Northern Ireland may become more attractive to asylum seekers, leading to potential flow to the Republic.
The UK’s Defence Minister, Grant Shapps, confirmed intentions to appeal the ruling to maintain control of borders. The Irish government awaits further steps in the process as they plan to address the situation with UK counterparts.
