Coalition nation: Analyst warns political parties unprepared for upcoming changes

As South Africa approaches the upcoming elections on 29 May, the possibility of coalition governments in multiple provinces looms large. Analysts caution that while the concept of a Government of National Unity (GNU) is discussed, the current political landscape suggests parties may not be fully prepared.

During a Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) dialogue on coalition viability, experts noted the differences in the country’s mood and political awareness compared to the early post-apartheid era, making a GNU less likely. The electorate is more politically savvy and less likely to accept such arrangements easily.
