Odisha is gearing up for Phase 2 of Assembly elections, coinciding with the Lok Sabha polls on May 20, 2024. 35 assembly constituencies will witness 265 candidates and 13 vying for five Lok Sabha seats.
The Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has released a report analyzing the criminal and financial background of candidates.
Candidates with criminal cases
Out of the 265 candidates, 87 (33%) have declared criminal cases. In the first phase, 65 out of 243 had criminal cases.
Serious Criminal Cases
70 candidates (26%) have declared serious criminal cases. ADR defines serious cases involving assault, murder, kidnap, rape, or offenses under various laws.
Cases related to murder and attempt to murder
Five candidates have murder cases, and 16 have attempted murder cases.
Cases related to crime against women
11 candidates have such cases.
Red Alert constituencies
14 out of 35 constituencies are red alert. These are where 3 or more candidates have criminal cases.
