The House of Representatives in Sanaa passes new law to protect religious figures
In a recent development, the House of Representatives in Sanaa has approved a draft law for the year 2020 aimed at protecting the sanctity of prophets and messengers. The new article, added to Republican Decree Law No. 12 of 1994 regarding crimes and punishments, imposes strict penalties on those who insult or despise religious figures.
Article (259) of the law outlines the penalties, including imprisonment for up to five years for individuals found guilty of such actions. Additionally, legal entities could face fines of not less than 10 million riyals if the crime is committed on their behalf. The law also holds individuals responsible for the management of the legal entity accountable for any offenses committed under their watch.
The House also approved granting Yemeni courts jurisdiction to handle cases related to this crime, as per the recommendations of the joint committee responsible for codifying Islamic Sharia and justice laws.
This legal development marks a significant step towards protecting the religious sentiments of the people and upholding respect for religious figures in Yemen.
