Japan’s government is increasing defense spending to enhance the country’s defense capabilities. At the same time, the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Kure District Headquarters is expanding its activities as it celebrates its 70th anniversary on July 1 in Hiroshima Prefecture.
Located in the city of Kure, closely linked to the former Japanese Imperial Navy, the unit has grown its operations since World War II, focusing on national defense, disaster relief efforts, and overseas missions.
Notably, the MSDF’s Kaga destroyer, stationed at the Kure Naval Base, is undergoing a significant upgrade. The modifications aim to transform the vessel into an aircraft carrier capable of deploying F-35B stealth fighter jets, which can take off and land vertically on short runways.
