The American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Maryland Congressional Race
American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) made headlines for targeting members of the Squad, but their involvement in a Maryland congressional race has raised eyebrows. AIPAC has poured $4.1 million into supporting state Senator Sarah Elfreth in a competitive race for an open congressional seat.
The candidate being targeted by AIPAC is former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who was present during the January 6 attacks. Despite neither candidate taking a strong stance on Israel, AIPAC’s support for Elfreth has significantly boosted her campaign despite Dunn outraising her in individual contributions.
Dunn’s campaign has criticized Elfreth for associations with far-right Republicans, while Elfreth’s camp denies coordinating with AIPAC. AIPAC’s super PAC has endorsed Elfreth due to her stances on issues beyond Israel, such as abortion rights and climate change.
The involvement of AIPAC in this race has sparked controversy, with Dunn highlighting the issue of dark money influence. Despite both candidates’ willingness to condition aid to Israel, the support from AIPAC has brought further scrutiny to the campaign.
