Former President Donald Trump shocked rally-goers in Wildwood, New Jersey, by praising fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter as “a wonderful man” before shifting to controversial comments about immigrants in the US. Speaking to a crowd of about 80,000 supporters, Trump lauded Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Lecter in “Silence of the Lambs” while denouncing unauthorized immigrants entering the country. The event, overshadowed by the Great White roller coaster in the kitschy seaside resort, saw attendees leaving as Trump continued his speech.
In addition to his Hannibal Lecter comments, Trump reiterated claims about facing indictments related to the 2020 election, classified information, and hush money payments. Despite ongoing legal challenges, Trump dismissed the charges as “bullshit” to a cheering crowd. Supporters, decked out in Trump flags, flocked to Wildwood from across the east coast, camping out overnight for the rally.
New Jersey Democrats downplayed the significance of the event, with Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and Congressman Andy Kim voicing skepticism about Trump’s political impact in the state. Sherrill emphasized that New Jersey would not be a welcoming place for Trump, while Kim highlighted the need for a more positive political agenda.
