Poland Commits to Bolstering Border Security with Belarus, Allocates Funds

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk took a strong stand on border security during his visit to the Belarus border, which also serves as the EU’s external border. Tusk accused Belarus of waging a “hybrid war” against the West by facilitating illegal migration into the EU and pledged to bolster security measures.

Speaking to reporters at the border, Tusk highlighted the escalating challenges posed by the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and Russian aggression, emphasizing the need for Europe to invest in strengthening its security, particularly along Poland’s eastern border.

He assured security force commanders that resources would not be a constraint in safeguarding Poland’s border. The crisis at the EU’s eastern border with Belarus in 2021, triggered by a surge in migrants, was attributed to Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s alleged attempts to destabilize the EU.

Notably, the previous Polish government responded to the crisis by erecting a high steel wall. Tusk’s visit signals a continued commitment to fortifying the EU’s eastern border against external threats.
