A group of prominent Nigerians and leaders have come together to call for the restructuring of the country into regions, as they believe that the current structure is not working efficiently. The call was made during a symposium organized by The Rebirth Group and Rebuilding Nigeria at the University of Ibadan.
The leaders, including Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, Prof John Bunmi Ayoade, and Dr. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe, proposed the discentralisation of Nigeria into six equal regions while maintaining the states’ current structure. Each region would have its own Constitution, making the country known as the United Regions of Nigeria (URN).
They suggested that the central government should focus only on issues that the federating units cannot handle, making it weaker in relation to other levels of government. Additionally, to prevent domination, they proposed rotational leadership within each level of government.
This restructuring plan aims to create a more autonomous and balanced system for the country, ensuring that each region has equal status and representation.
