A tragic incident struck Agam and Tanah Datar districts in West Sumatra province when heavy rain led to a flash flood and cold lava flow from Mount Marapi. The disaster, which occurred around 10:30 pm on Saturday, resulted in the death of twelve individuals, with four still missing in Agam district. Among the deceased were a three-year-old and an eight-year-old.
Cold lava, scientifically known as lahar, is a mixture of volcanic substances like ash, sand, and pebbles washed down a volcano’s slopes by rain. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities sending rescue teams and rubber boats to find the missing victims and provide shelter for the affected residents. Evacuation centres and emergency posts have been established in various locations within the two districts.
Let us stand together in solidarity with the people of Agam and Tanah Datar districts as they navigate through this challenging time, providing support and assistance wherever possible.
