Crackdown on Tandoors Selling Naan/Roti at Arbitrary Prices in Karachi

The Karachi administration has taken a strong stand against tandoors selling naan/roti at increased prices by sealing three indoor shops in Khadda Market and Chand Bibi Road. The Commissioner of Karachi has directed deputy commissioners to ensure compliance with government-set rates and warned of zero tolerance for violators. This comes after the Naan Bai Association in Punjab announced a strike against what they consider an unjust price set by the authorities.

The association demanded a reduction in flour prices to align with the government-set rate of Rs. 16 for a roti. They threatened a province-wide strike if their demands were not met. The crackdown has sparked controversy, with the association calling for a fixed price of Rs. 1600 for a 20kg flour bag to sell roti at Rs. 16. The situation remains tense as the authorities and tandoor owners stand at an impasse over pricing.
