Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his European tour with a visit to Hungary, where he engaged in meetings with Hungarian officials, including Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The visit culminated in a lunch hosted by Orban and attended by Xi Jinping and their respective spouses.
During the visit, journalists questioned Orban and Xi about anti-Chinese protests that occurred prior to Xi’s arrival. Orban emphasized the importance of balancing freedom of expression with respecting the rights of visiting guests. Interestingly, Pro-Tibet protesters were dispersed by Chinese policemen in civilian attire, a move defended by Orban as necessary for maintaining public order.
Amidst the visit, Hungary and China signed 18 agreements, focusing on projects like a railway line, a Budapest railway bypass, and a border crossing between Serbia and Hungary. Potential collaborations on an oil pipeline and nuclear energy were also discussed.
Prior to Hungary, Xi visited France and Serbia, further strengthening diplomatic ties in the region. The visit marked a significant step in enhancing bilateral cooperation between China and Hungary.
