In Rembertów, Warsaw, the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has completed the third stage of its search operations, uncovering a tragic past. The site, once a NKVD prisoner-of-war camp, held the remains of over thirty individuals from the German forced labor camp era. This year, efforts focused on locating burial sites of those who perished in the harsh conditions of the camp and during a liberation action in 1945.
Uncovering the Past: The Context
The IPN’s methodology involved excavating two locations beyond the camp’s boundaries based on historical evidence. A skeleton and scattered bones were discovered, prompting further analysis with the help of volunteers.
Moving Forward: Honoring the Fallen
This investigation not only sheds light on the horrors of war but also emphasizes the importance of preserving historical memory. The quest to identify and commemorate the victims of Rembertów’s dark history continues as a solemn reminder of the past.
