Empowering Women Behind the Wheels in Lagos, Nigeria
Last February in Oshodi, Lagos, a female taxi driver, Gladys April Abanang, experienced a serious accident. Victoria Oyeyemi, the chief security officer for Ladies on Wheel Association of Nigeria (LOWAN), rushed to the scene to help. LOWAN, a non-profit organization supporting women drivers, has grown from 6 to 5,000 members across Nigeria, providing emergency assistance, loans for car ownership, and support for members facing gender-based violence.
The increase in female commercial drivers in Nigeria is attributed to worsening economic conditions. However, women drivers face discrimination, harassment, and rejection from passengers and law enforcement. LOWAN aims to change this narrative by providing a support system and financial assistance.
In a challenging economic climate, LOWAN offers loans, savings schemes, and emotional support to its members. Despite the government’s limited support, LOWAN continues to empower women drivers in Lagos, proving that women can thrive in the male-dominated transport industry.
