Enhancing Water Cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan: A Step towards Unity
In a recent meeting in Kabul, Iran’s deputy ambassador Mortazavi discussed the importance of finalizing the Kamal Khan Dam with Acting Minister of Water and Energy of Afghanistan, Abdul Latif Mansoor. Mortazavi highlighted how water cooperation can strengthen the bond between Tehran and Kabul, benefiting the Muslim populations of both countries.
Since the Helmand River Treaty of 1973, Iran’s annual water share of 850 million cubic meters has faced challenges due to drought and abnormal water years, impacting the residents of Sistan and Baluchistan province in Iran. Mansoor assured that efforts have been made to allocate a significant amount of Iran’s water share.
The meeting also addressed the Iran-Afghanistan supply chain in the energy sector, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration in water management. This cooperation not only ensures the equitable distribution of water resources but also fosters unity between the two nations.
By working together on water-related issues, Iran and Afghanistan strive to overcome challenges and strengthen their bilateral ties for the benefit of their people.
