Hamas reports death of captive from Israeli air strike | Gaza conflict update

British-Israeli Nadav Popplewell was taken captive by Hamas on October 7 from Nirim kibbutz, and his death was announced by the Qassam Brigades due to injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike a month ago.

Hamas released a video of Popplewell with a bruised eye, stating “Time is running out. Your government is lying.” This is the third video released by Hamas in less than a month, showing captives held in Gaza amid pressure on the Israeli government to secure their release.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reported on the tactic of releasing videos on Saturdays to pressure the Israeli government. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum in Israel called on the government to strike a deal with Hamas for the captives’ release, criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for inaction.

Despite the pressure, Netanyahu has failed to reach a deal. The October 7 attack by Hamas resulted in 1,139 deaths and 250 captives taken to the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials report 128 still held, with 36 confirmed dead.

Efforts continue to secure the release of captives as families plead for action to bring their loved ones back from captivity.
