Former Union Minister Clarifies ‘Two Wives’ Remark
Former Union Minister and Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate from Ratlam, Kantilal Bhuria, recently sparked controversy with his ‘two wives’ remark. He stated that men with two wives could benefit Rs 2 lakh under his party’s Mahalaxmi scheme. The BJP called for action from the Election Commission of India in response.
In a video statement, Bhuria clarified that his comment was sarcastic and in response to a tribal man’s question about the benefits for those with two wives in tribal society. He emphasized the Congress’ commitment to empowering women by providing Rs 1 lakh annually, amounting to Rs 8,500 per month.
During a rally in Sailana, Bhuria reiterated the party’s promise of depositing Rs 1 lakh in every woman’s bank account, including those with multiple wives. He is contesting against BJP’s Anita Chauhan in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Ratlam scheduled for May 13.
Despite the initial controversy, Bhuria’s clarification aims to set the record straight and highlight the party’s stance on women’s empowerment through financial support.
