Vote counting begins in Chad to restore civilian rule

By NDI EUGENE NDI

Vote counting in Chad’s presidential elections is in progress after a tense but “peaceful” voting day. The elections mark a potential transition from junta-led rule to democracy, with General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno at the helm of the three-year transition. Despite incidents like a voter being shot dead and concerns over transparency, the election proceeded. The EU criticized Chad for not accrediting local observers, hindering transparency. General Deby, following his father’s death in 2021, promised civilian rule in 18 months but extended the transition period, leading to protests and violence. Despite criticism and disqualifications of opposition figures, the election proceeded with General Deby and Prime Minister Masra as major contenders. Questions about credibility linger due to the constitution and election management. Both candidates praised the Chadian people for their participation, expressing confidence in the outcome. The provisional results are expected on May 21, with a possible second round on June 22 if needed.
