India’s Supreme Court has granted temporary bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, allowing him to campaign in the ongoing national election, a move that bolsters the opposition alliance. Kejriwal was arrested in March on bribery charges, which were seen as politically motivated.

The court ruling allows Kejriwal to campaign until June 1st, after which he must surrender back into custody. The arrest of Kejriwal had sparked concerns of government misuse of power to target political rivals.

Despite opposition from investigative agencies, the Supreme Court’s decision allows Kejriwal to participate in the election campaign. His party, AAP, and other opposition parties view this ruling as a victory for democracy in the face of alleged government authoritarianism.
