Human Rights Watch is urging Germany to confirm whether they have imposed a year-long ban on British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah from entering Europe. Abu Sittah, who worked in Gaza during the recent conflict, was recently barred from entering France and the Netherlands as well.
Earlier this year, Germany previously banned Abu Sittah from entering the country for a Palestine solidarity conference. His lawyers reported that French authorities informed him of the ban when he tried to enter Europe, citing the placement of his name on the Schengen Information System.
Yasmine Ahmed from HRW criticized Germany’s actions, stating that the ban violates Abu Sitta’s freedom of expression and assembly rights. She emphasized the importance of facilitating these rights within legal boundaries.
Since raising awareness about the Gaza war, where he witnessed Israeli military atrocities targeting civilians, Abu Sittah has faced restrictions hindering his efforts to speak out. Despite the challenges, he continues to shed light on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
