The BoM’s Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre has forecasted a level G4 storm, the second-highest classification, to impact from 8pm on Friday and gradually weaken over the weekend. This warning was issued to inform government and critical infrastructure operators to take necessary precautions.
The storm could disrupt power grids, satellite services, and high-frequency radio communications. Bright auroras may be visible at low latitudes, including areas near Sydney and Perth if G4 conditions are met.
Conditions are expected to decrease to G3 by Saturday and last until around 6 am on Sunday, with a margin of about 10 hours.
The storm is caused by multiple mass ejections from the sun, occurring between Wednesday and Thursday. Similar warnings were issued in the United States by NOAA.
NASA highlighted the cyclic nature of solar activity and its potential for flares and explosions, emphasizing the need for caution.
