Chad’s military leader, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 40, has emerged as the winner of the presidential election, securing 61.03% of the votes to avoid a run-off. His main challenger, Prime Minister Succes Masra, disputed the results, while former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke came in third.
The provisional results were announced earlier than expected, marking Chad’s return to constitutional rule through the ballot box. However, opposition parties have raised concerns over vote-rigging and electoral transparency.
The electoral period was marred by violence, including the killing of an opposition figure, leading to doubts about the credibility of the process. Despite the transition to democratic rule, analysts believe Deby will maintain military influence in civilian clothing.
