The Zambian government has taken decisive action to address a maize shortage caused by drought. The cabinet approved the suspension of tax on all imported maize, with the Ministry of Finance instructed to implement the decision immediately. In addition to government imports for reserves, the private sector is encouraged to engage in maize imports.
The Agriculture Ministry will be issuing permits to Zambians for maize imports, as the country grapples with a state of national disaster and emergency due to poor rains impacting crop production. Approximately 9.8 million people have been affected by the drought, with 6.6 million requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. This strategic move aims to ensure food security and alleviate the impact of the crisis on the Zambian population.
