YEREVAN, APRIL 24, ARMENPRESS. Stefan Müller-Altermatt, a member of the National Council of Switzerland, shared his views on the challenges of recognizing the Armenian Genocide in an interview with Armenpress. He expressed doubts about Turkey’s current leadership being capable of recognizing this historical event.
In assessing the progress of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Müller-Altermatt criticized the slow and quiet response from the civilized world. He emphasized the importance of a united global voice condemning genocide to prevent its recurrence.
Müller-Altermatt pointed out that Turkey’s denial policy persists even after 109 years, suggesting that a change in power in Ankara may be necessary for acknowledging the genocide. He stressed the significance of engaging Turkish society in facing historical truths.
Regarding the ongoing dialogue between Armenia and Turkey, he highlighted the potential impact of normalized relations on acknowledging the genocide. He emphasized the need for genuine peace based on historical truth.
Reflecting on the phrase “Never Again,” Müller-Altermatt called for a stronger stance against despotic regimes and emphasized the universal value of international and human rights.
