Spain’s Popular Party (PP) is pushing for the reopening of commercial customs in the occupied city of Melilla with Morocco. The party filed a non-legislative proposal demanding a definite date for the reopening without further delay. MP Sofía Acedo emphasized the need for reciprocity in travel arrangements and urged Rabat to lift the 24-hour visa restriction for cross-border workers.
Acedo expressed disappointment that the recent improvement in Spain-Morocco relations had not benefitted Ceuta and Melilla. She stressed the importance of the initiative, which was prompted by local businessmen and residents with ties across the border.
The Spanish Freight agents also expressed concern over the lack of progress in reopening customs crossings in Ceuta and Melilla. The continued closure has severely impacted businesses in the sector, leading to calls for a resolution as soon as possible.
The MP concluded by urging the Spanish government to defend the rights of Melilla and Ceuta residents, as it ultimately protects the interests of all Spaniards.
