Second General Strike Against Milei Under Way
The second general strike against the Libertarian administration of President Javier Milei is currently in progress. Initiated by the opposition General Labor Confederation (CGT), this protest aims to block the passage of the Omnibus Law bill -officially known as Bases Law- which includes significant economic measures affecting labor rights and taxation. The strike seeks to deter Milei from signing the May Pact in Córdoba on May 25, where a mega-state reform to reduce expenditures and achieve zero fiscal deficit is planned.
The strike has resulted in the halt of most economic activities, with public transport unavailable, and various sectors, including bank, retail, and air services, affected. The bill under discussion also involves granting legislative powers to the Executive, privatization of State-run companies, and a labor reform. The CGT asserts that all UP Senators will reject the bill, though efforts to reverse this outcome are noted from some Governors.
In response to potential blockades, Milei’s Government introduced an anti-picketing protocol to maintain free circulation. Despite the impact on millions due to transportation disruptions, Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni questioned the strike’s justification, labeling it as politically motivated.
