Despite the potential benefits, the implementation of carbon capture projects in Canada has faced challenges. For instance, Shell Canada’s Quest CCS facility received substantial subsidies to cover its costs. Another project by Capital Power was canceled due to economic infeasibility, despite government promises to support it. The uncertainty surrounding carbon contracts and pricing further complicates the situation.
While some projects face setbacks, Minister Wilkinson remains optimistic about the future of carbon capture technology. He believes that different approaches will emerge across various sectors to utilize this technology effectively in meeting clean energy regulations.
