Muscat – In a significant move towards enhancing Oman’s power generation and water desalination capacities, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) recently signed new agreements with four key plants in Oman, totaling over RO500mn in costs.
The agreements were formalized with Barka 1 Independent Water and Power Plant, Barka 2 Independent Water and Power Plant, Al Rusail Power Plant, and Manah Independent Power Plant. The signing ceremony was graced by H E Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of Oman Investment Authority, and Eng Ahmed bin Hamad al Subhi, Chairman of Nama Group.
The contracts, lasting up to nine years, aim to bolster the nation’s energy and water supply networks in line with the growing demand. As per the agreements, the plants will provide a total capacity exceeding 1,500MW of electricity and 200,000 cubic metres per day of desalinated water.
H E Murshidi highlighted the significance of these agreements in providing stability to the energy sector and boosting investor confidence. Nama Group’s objectives include cost reduction, boosting investor confidence, and attracting global investment in energy and water projects.
Ahmed bin Salim al Abri, Acting CEO of Nama PWP, emphasized the importance of public-private sector cooperation and the opportunities these agreements present for existing plants. Nama PWP’s tender for 2024 opens up competition for plants with expired contracts to secure new agreements.
These developments mark a positive move towards ensuring a sustainable and stable energy supply for Oman’s future needs.
