Consultants Signing Up to New Public Contract on the Rise

During an Oireachtas committee meeting, it was revealed that over half of hospital consultants have now agreed to the new public contract. As of May 2, a total of 2,229 consultants have signed up, showing an increase of about 300 in the past two months.

Currently, there are 4,258 consultants working in public health services, with an increase of 4.2% in outpatient appointments in the first quarter of 2024 compared to 2023. Despite improvements at University Hospital Galway, patient overcrowding remains a concern.

On the financial front, health spending is running €500 million above budget, with most of it allocated to acute services. The Department of Health anticipates a supplementary estimate by the end of the year to address budget shortfalls.

Sinn Féin’s health spokesperson criticized the government for underestimating the health budget and urged better funding strategies. Despite challenges, efforts are being made to maintain crucial services while managing financial constraints.
