Kataib Hezbollah demands US troops exit Iraq

Renewed Call for US Troops Withdrawal in Iraq by Kataib Hezbollah

Baghdad – The powerful Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq has once again demanded the withdrawal of US troops from the country, signaling a renewed tension in the region. The Iran-backed armed group had previously suspended attacks on American forces, but now they are resuming their calls for the US to leave Iraq.

Despite ongoing talks between Washington and Baghdad regarding the presence of US troops in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition, Kataib Hezbollah sees a lack of seriousness from both the American and Iraqi governments in addressing their demands.

The United States considers Kataib Hezbollah a terrorist group and has targeted its operations in recent strikes. Following increased tensions in the region, especially after the Israel-Hamas conflict, US troops have faced over 165 attacks primarily in Iraq and Syria. The Islamic Resistance of Iran-backed groups, including Kataib Hezbollah, has claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.

With the deadly drone strike in January and subsequent retaliation, the situation has once again escalated, leading to the suspension of attacks by Kataib Hezbollah. However, the group’s latest call for US troops withdrawal suggests that the peace may be short-lived.

As talks on the coalition’s presence continue, the future of US troops in Iraq remains uncertain, with Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani pushing for an end to the coalition’s mission. The presence of 2,500 US troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the coalition against the Islamic State adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
