Australia is taking steps to tighten regulations on international student visas, as part of efforts to manage record migration levels. The country has increased the required savings amount for international students applying for visas to A$29,710 (€18,218), following a previous increase in October. This comes after warnings to several colleges for fraudulent student recruitment practices.
The government has also raised English language requirements for student visas and is cracking down on settings that allow students to extend their stay. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil emphasized the need to weed out exploitative practices in the international education sector, noting that dodgy providers have no place in the industry.
Australia’s international education sector is a significant export industry, contributing A$36.4 billion to the economy in 2022/23. However, the surge in migration, mostly driven by international students, has led to soaring rental prices and placed pressure on the government. Policies are being implemented to reduce migration levels and address the challenges posed by the influx of migrants.
