As tensions escalate in the Middle East, the United Nations and aid agencies are raising alarm over the Israeli army’s decision to seize the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and southern Gaza. This critical aid route has been cut off, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the enclave, which is teetering on the brink of famine.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Israel to reopen two key land crossings to allow essential aid supplies to reach Palestinians in Gaza. “The closure of both the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings is worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. They must be reopened immediately,” Guterres stated.

Israel’s seizure of the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing comes amidst fragile ceasefire talks with the Palestinian group Hamas. While Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal from Qatari and Egyptian mediators, Israel has deemed the terms insufficient and has deployed troops to the area.

‘It’s not safe’

The Red Crescent has reported a complete halt in aid shipments via the Rafah crossing, condemning Israel’s actions that have left the residents of the Strip in a desperate situation. The UN and humanitarian agencies emphasize the importance of ensuring safe access to aid and evacuations for those in need.

Amnesty International has called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its ground operations in Rafah and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza without hindrance. The organization warns that further military escalation will only worsen the suffering of Palestinians in the region.

Israel’s Defence Minister has pledged to continue the operation in Rafah until Hamas is “eliminated” from the area. While Israel expresses a willingness to make compromises for the return of captives, the situation remains tense and uncertain.

Despite ongoing military operations, aid groups stress the urgency of delivering supplies to Gaza, where famine has already taken hold in certain areas. The restrictions on aid deliveries have left the population vulnerable and in urgent need of assistance.
