Bird Flu in the Falklands: Reflecting on the 23/24 Season and Planning for 24/25
On Thursday, May 2nd, the Wildlife Disease Response Group, composed of various stakeholders including the Falkland Islands Government and conservation organizations, met to discuss the High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) situation in the Falklands and plan for the upcoming seasons.
It was noted that the impact of HPAI in the Falkland Islands is expected to worsen in the upcoming 24/25 season. However, the group praised the collaborative efforts and communication among stakeholders in response to the outbreak during the 23/24 season.
While there will be no major changes to the response strategy, minor adjustments to legislation and response levels are being considered to enhance efficiency.
Research indicates that some birds in the Falklands have developed antibodies against HPAI, potentially providing some level of immunity in certain populations. Further studies are needed to fully understand the virus’s impact on local bird populations.
Efforts to mitigate the impact of HPAI in the upcoming season are ongoing, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high biosecurity standards among the public.
